MontanaMilan Origins

While MontanaMilan is not my first venture, it is certainly a new one. After many years of working full time in the NYC fashion industry, and running my own children’s skiwear line during any and every hour I could find, I decided to take a risk and work on my then small business full time. Recognizing that it would be difficult to find a factory to produce the quality I needed and expected, I packed up and moved back home to Chicago. During this time, I ran a successful children’s ski line, started my own factory, and even married my current husband of over 20 years. After two years of putting in nothing but a hundred percent of my effort, and successfully fulfilling all my boutique orders, my husband and I decided to start a family.

“I wanted my company to be rooted in my truth as a mother, and for my brand to have a story close to my heart.”

Fast forward twenty years later, three kids, and a new house, my children no longer need me like they once did. My days as the in-house Halloween designer, Chief Creative Officer of school projects, and play-date Strategist are over. However, as a designer at heart, I kept my passion for childrenswear and launched it into what is now MontanaMilan. The inspiration for MontanaMilan comes from the names of my two eldest daughters; like the simplicity in the big sky state of Montana, and the legendary beauty of Milan. I wanted my company to be rooted in my truth as a mother, and for my brand to have a story close to my heart.

Collection Overview

The idea behind the rainwear came as I recognized the lack of classic, colorful, yet simple and long lasting rainwear while shopping for my girls. My first sketches and samples for MontanaMilan were therefore the classic “Full Swing Raincoat” and the “Parka”, which eventually inspired me to recreate them in many new colors, while experimenting with different fabrics. My goal for childrenswear has always been to create non-commercial garments that are safe and chemical free for all. I have always recognized quality craftsmanship as coming from a carefully monitored production process. I am active throughout the entire process to ensure that each garment is produced with love and care, allowing you to gift your child with style and consciousness. All MontanaMilan garments are therefore produced in local Chicago factories, and across the U.S., to carefully monitor the quality and craftsmanship of each product.

Flexibility through Design

As a mother, I recognize that childhood is dynamic and full of adventure. I have therefore chosen fabrics that are machine washable, allowing you to take your little one from the play lot to the party with only a wash cycle, or gentle dab of water in between. When my children were younger, I loved watching their sense of being thrive through any activity. Each of my coats builds upon the same principle of adventure, and need for versatility in childrenswear, by incorporating fabrics for cool summer mornings at the farmer’s market, rainy walks to school, and even fall trips to the zoo.

I understand the importance of purchasing children’s clothing that can sustain their growth. Each of my coats guarantees at least a year and half of growth, allowing mother’s, father’s, grandparent’s and anyone important in a child’s life to gift them with a classic garment that is sustainable throughout the seasons. MontanaMilan is my joy of design, and building a brand dedicated to outfitting children with gentle and quality fabrics.
